HMCG requested launch of the AWB to the assistance of the converted tug "Jolly", disabled with complete loss of propulsion and generation power, west of the South Falls. On scene AWB found "Jolly" adrift and completely without power except for minimal VHF communication. "Jolly" was taken in tow and in view of the size of the casualty, the south going tide and the wind direction, the Cox'n decided the best prospect would be to tow "Jolly" to Dover. HMCG concurred with this and offered to request a launch of the Dover AWB to take over the tow. However, Cox'n Cannon thought this unnecessary and proposed to tow "Jolly" to Dover with the Ramsgate AWB.
As the AWB proceeded towards Dover HMCG then advised that the Dover Harbour Authority had refused to allow "Jolly" to enter the port and in that circumstance the AWB altered course towards Ramsgate. At this time, the skipper of "Jolly" advised the AWB that he did not wish to enter any port and wanted to be taken to an anchorage. Cox'n Cannon tried to dissuade the skipper from this course of action as any anchorage off Ramsgate would be on a lee shore and unsafe given the powerless condition of the "Jolly", her single handed manning and a small dinghy being her only means of reaching the shore.
As this discussion proceeded, the MCA, via Dover MRCC instructed that the "Jolly" must be towed in to a port. In accordance with this instruction the AWB towed "Jolly" in to Ramsgate Harbour and saw her securely moored alongside the East Pier.

In consultation with HMCG, it was decided to launch the AWB in order to make the best of the remaining daylight in locating the vessel.

AWB came up with "Alpha" under way and making slow speed  towards Ramsgate. Having considered the possible length of service under escort, the imminent exhaustion of useable fuel on the casualty and traffic conditions in the area to be transited, the cox'n decided to take "Alpha" in tow.
