Book signing and reading in aid of the RNLI
On the 20th November 1991 the Ramsgate Lifeboat was called out to the Radio Ship “Ross Revenge” which had run aground on the Goodwin Sands.
The Lifeboat itself was also pushed onto the sands while attempting to take of the crew who were eventually air lifted to safety by an RAF helicopter. One of the crew in question, Steve Conway never forgot the risks taken by the Lifeboat crew to rescue him that day, and the reliance he and his crewmates always had on the life boat crew when anchored off the UK coast.
Steve Conway has written a memoir titled "Shiprocked - Life on the waves with Radio Caroline" about his time on the “Ross Revenge” and the dramatic end to this time. He is coming to the Ramsgate Library on Saturday 27th March 2010 at 3pm to read from this book and to say thank you to the Ramsgate Lifeboat.
In lieu of ticket sales, Steve Conway is asking all attendees to offer a donation to the RNLI.

Busy start to the year for the Ramsgate Lifeboats

The RNLI has just issued its rescue statistics for the lifeboat stations in Kent, which reveals that demands for its services remains high despite the recent poor summer weather.
The figures cover the first six months – January to June 2008 – and reveal that overall, Kent in ‘08 was busier than ‘07 by 23 launches, from 142 in the first half of ‘07 to 165 in the same period in ‘08.
Of the eight stations in Kent, three – Ramsgate, Sheerness and Dover – have shown increases and continue to be the busiest respectively across the county. Ramsgate’s launches are up by nearly 50 per cent from 29 for the first six months in ‘07 to 43 for the same period in ‘08.
Launches to powered pleasure craft – jet skis, diving boats, small open power boats and large open power boats measuring over five metres – has seen the biggest increase, with 55 launches in ‘08, compared with 39 in 2007. Overall launches to vessels with machinery failure (42 out of 165 in ‘08) continues to account for roughly one third of the launches.
