Walmer’s Lifeboat crew soon located the second angler, a man in his forties, and took him ashore where he was handed into the care of the South East Coast Ambulance Service. He was then flown in the Costaguard search and rescue helicopter from Lydd to William Harvey hospital in Ashford.

Service Call 17

29th April @ 01:52 AWB launched to the assistance of a yacht with electrical failure 3 miles off Ramsgate. AWB searched the area with the assistance of one of Ramsgate's Pilot Boats but nothing found. With the use of our direction finder, which gives the compass bearing of a radio signal, and radar, we were able to eventually locate the casualty East of the Goodwin Sands. Due to his electrical failure the casualty had no GPS, fixed VHF radio or any other electronic navigation equipment. Fortunately the casualty did have a hand held VHF, which was how we managed to locate him. AWB passed a line and towed the casualty onto a berth in Ramsgate Harbour. If we had not reached the casualty when we did, there was a good possibility that he would have run aground on the Goodwin Sands, as they were situated directly between his position and the harbour entrance.
